Red Bull advisor Helmut Marko has detailed a crucial area in which McLaren holds an advantage over Red Bull.

Lando Norris sealed victory at the Australian Grand Prix to commence his season in strong fashion.

The McLaren driver prevailed in mixed conditions with multiple drivers suffering from race-ending spins into the barrier throughout the grand prix.

Following a late-race safety car, Norris came under pressure from Max Verstappen but was able to fend off his rival for the top spot on the podium

Norris and team-mate Oscar Piastri built a mammoth gap over Verstappen prior to the safety car which offered Red Bull a chance at victory with fresh tyres.

“We were happy with the safety car, because as the race progressed we saw that our tyre wear was too strong,” Marko stated to Sky Deutschland

“To have a real chance, it should have rained more. But we are very happy with the result. It was very close and overall I have to say it was a great race.”

Strong tyre management was a key trait at McLaren last year – and Marko has concluded it is a factor that has carried over to its current car.

“McLaren is just better in terms of tyre wear,” Marko added.

“We have already seen that in the long runs, we saw that in Bahrain and that is something we still have to work hard on.”
