Former England boss Eddie Jones shared his verdict on the performance of his ex-team in Dublin, and the areas they need to improve on against France on Saturday.

Fresh from a poor November campaign, England posed Ireland some problems before going down 27-22 in their 2025 Six Nations opener last week — their seventh defeat in nine Tests against all opponents.

Jones, speaking as a pundit at the Aviva Stadium, gave a measured assessment of England’s defeat, highlighting positives while admitting the gap to the top teams.

Known for his sharp opinions, the fiery Australian was notably restrained in his ITV debut, offering analysis without controversy.

“You’ve got to find the positives,” Jones said. “Their physicality, their defence in the first half, their breakdown work was good. And also, that ability just to stay in the game.”

England started well but fell behind 27-10 before scoring late tries. Jones pointed to discipline as a key issue.

“They gave away seven penalties and two free-kicks. Ireland had lineouts in their half, got their rhythm, and dominated,” he said.

The current Japan head coach stressed the need for England’s senior players to step up.

“For England to go forward, they need a couple of those senior guys to really show the way and bring the younger guys with them.”
