Alpine driver Jack Doohan has pointed to the positive of standing aside for reserve driver Ryo Hirakawa in Japanese Grand Prix first practice.
Doohan’s future with the Enstone-and-Viry-based outfit has been subjected to speculation since even before the season began after Franco Colapinto was brought in from Williams to act as a reserve.
The Australian failed to complete a lap at his home race but did put down an improved performance in China, albeit still some way adrift of a points-paying position.
Despite his inexperience and the fact that his rookie status means he has completed the requisite ‘rookie’ sessions for his car – with teams having to allow two FP1s per car, per season for drivers with two or fewer F1 races to participate – Doohan is the driver to step aside for Hirakawa at Suzuka, leading to further speculation over his future.
But Doohan has instead suggested that Hirakawa could help his weekend, given the Japanese driver’s prior experience at Suzuka.
Hirakawa to share Suzuka knowledge
“It has been great to have a week off to regroup as a team after a tough start to the season,” said Doohan.
“Pierre and I have spent some time at the factory debriefing from the first two rounds and preparing for the upcoming triple header starting with Japan. I am a big fan of the food and the culture in Japan, and I love making a stop in Tokyo to experience the culture and atmosphere there.
“The circuit is one I particularly love. I have raced there previously in Asian F3, but this will be my first time experiencing it in Formula 1 machinery which will provide a whole new challenge with its high speed and high-risk high-reward nature.
“I’ll be in the car from Free Practice 2 as Ryo drives in Free Practice 1. He has a lot of experience here so it will be good to take some of that knowledge for the weekend.
“The aim will be to make the most of the weekend and score some all-important points for the team.”
