Damian McKenzie has put pen to paper on a new contract with New Zealand Rugby that allows the All Blacks and chiefs playmaker to still explore his options abroad.

The 29-year-old has re-committed until 2029, though his deal includes the option of a sabbatical after the 2027 World Cup, making him an attractive target for overseas clubs.

NZR CEO Mark Robinson confirmed McKenzie’s contract makes provision for a possible spell outside the country in 2028, similar to Jordie Barrett’s recent stint with Irish giants Leinster.

The 61-Test McKenzie spent five months in Japan with Suntory Sungoliath three years ago after he came off-contract with NZR at the end of 2021.

“I’m incredibly excited to re-sign with NZ Rugby,” he said. “I feel like I’ve still got a lot to give and look forward to adding value where I can.”

Chiefs head coach Clayton McMillan, who is set to join Munster, highlighted the demand for McKenzie’s services. “There was a high level of interest from overseas, but we’re delighted he’s staying. He influences games in a way few can,” he said.

McKenzie debuted for the All Blacks in 2016 and played all 14 Tests in 2024. He is the Chiefs’ all-time leading points scorer with over 1,200 points and ranks third in caps alongside Sam Cane and Liam Messam.

All Blacks boss Scott Robertson emphasised McKenzie’s importance: “He has an incredible skill set and the ability to change a game. He keeps getting better, making him a critical signing for us heading into 2027 and beyond.”
