Luther star and Hollywood A-lister Idris Elba is among a group of new investors in the Kiro Formula E team.

Kiro, which rebranded from ERT for the start of the current season, announced its expanded ownership on Tuesday.

Elba is joined by Atlanta Hawks owner Tony Ressler and Steve Bornstein, former president and CEO of ESPN – among others – in backing the squad.

“Formula E is at the perfect intersection by blending sport and global entertainment with sustainability,” said Elba, whose notable roles include Heimdall in the Thor series, Stringer Bell in The Wire and most recently Knuckles in the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise.

“I’m proud to be joining the grid with Cupra Kiro at this pivotal moment. The team’s vision for the future, desire to innovate, and commitment to excellence resonate with me on a deep, personal level, and I’m looking forward to playing my part in its journey to the front of the grid.”

Kiro is represented on the grid this season by David Beckmann and Dan Ticktum, with the latter claiming eighth place in the opening round in Sao Paulo in December.

The team’s most successful Formula E season to date was the inaugural debut campaign in 2014-15 when, under its original China Racing guise, it finished fourth in the teams’ championship as Nelson Piquet Jr scored wins in Long Beach and Moscow.

The squad’s future in Formula E was only secured before the start of this season when it was purchased by American investment firm The Forest Road Company.

“Motorsport is one of the fastest-growing sports in the world, and Formula E was built with a future-focused mindset, founded in innovation and entertainment,” said David Kaplan, lead investor and team managing partner.

“Kiro Race Co is at the centre of that. This next phase of Kiro Race Co allows us to build a global brand and strengthen our competitive edge.

“Formula E’s growth trajectory is undeniable and will be accelerated by the unmatchable fan-focused race experience.”

Elba and his fellow new investors will be cheering on the team for the first time during the Jeddah E-Prix held in Saudi Arabia this weekend.
