McLaren has agreed a new contract with one of its top engineers after ending its long wait to win the constructors’ championship last year.
Peter Prodromou, its technical director for aerodynamics, has committed to the team in a multi-year deal, McLaren announced today.
The 56-year-old originally joined the team out of university in 1991. He rose to the position of chief aerodynamicist, then moved to Red Bull in 2007. After overseeing their rise to win four consecutive constructors’ championships, Prodromou returned to McLaren in 2015, and has remained ever since.
Team principal Andrea Stella placed Prodromou in charge of the aerodynamics division after replacing James Key as technical director in March 2023. The team rebounded from a poor start to the season to become one of the closest threats to Red Bull in the second half of the year.
They built on that progress last year, ending Red Bull’s domination of F1, and completed their turnaround under the management of Zak Brown, who took charge in 2016. Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri won six races between them in the Mercedes-powered MCL38, and together they beat rivals Ferrari to the championship by 14 points.
Stella praised Prodromou’s contribution to the team’s rise, saying he “has been a key architect of the team’s performance turnaround, on and off the track, securing the team’s ninth FIA Formula 1 constructors’ championship in 2024.”
McLaren consolidated the changes to its technical division early last year with the arrival of Rob Marshall from Red Bull as technical director for engineering and design. It also appointed David Sanchez, but parted ways with the former Ferrari designer after just three months. He is now at Alpine.
Another hiring from Red Bull, chief strategist Will Courtenay, is due to arrive at McLaren later this year.
