The Lions have confirmed the immediate departure of Sanele Nohamba after granting the versatile playmaker an early release from his contract.

A key member in the Lions backline since his 2022 move from the Sharks, Nohamba was reportedly set to part ways with the Johannesburg outfit at the end of the season to join Japanese side Shizuoka Blue Revs.

In a brief statement on Monday, the Lions announced the 26-year-old’s exit to continue his career in the Far East.

“The Lions Rugby Company has granted Sanele Nohamba an early release from his current contract,” the statement read.

“The scrumhalf continues his club career in Japan. We wish Sanele all the best.”

It’s believed that Nohamba’s diminishing role at the franchise has played a part in his decision part ways with the Pride.

He started just two of his only appearances in all competitions this season as the 2023-24 Vodacom URC Player of the Year struggled for game time after falling behind Springbok Morne van den Berg in the scrumhalf pecking order, and flyhalf duo Kade Wolhuter and Sam Francis.

Last season, Nohamba started 19 of 20 matches, scoring 135 points across the URC and EPCR Challenge Cup, splitting time at scrumhalf and flyhalf.
