One of SA sevens rugby’s brightest stars has set his sights on a stunning return to the shorter format with the national team.

Muller du Plessis is eager to play for the Blitzboks again after a nightmare run of injuries and is keeping the door open for a comeback.

“I haven’t made a final decision yet, but my heart lies with the sevens. I’m still in contact with them,” he told Rapport.

The 25-year-old speedster, who last played for the Blitzboks in Cape Town in 2022, has been sidelined by injuries and recently ended his Sharks contract early to focus on rehabilitation in Stellenbosch.

“My rehabilitation is going well. I’m training hard again. My focus now is to get fit again and be ready to play,” he said.

“I’m giving myself enough time to get back to top form before I rejoin. I trust that the right doors will open for me.”

Du Plessis is also excited about the direction of the Blitzboks under head coach Philip Snyman.

“I’m excited to see what coach Philip Snyman is up to. I would like to be part of the plans, especially for next year’s World Cup Sevens tournament,” he added.

He remains hopeful of helping the Blitzboks win another World Sevens Series title before considering a return to the 15-man game.
